Seven maidens celebrating the sunrise, watched by a secret onlooker.
Watercolour and gouache, faintly signed HIR----, or HIB---- and dated, 1876.
This painting, in excellent condition, measures approx. 5 x 7.25 inches ( 12.5 x 18.5cm), and is laid down to a card on which is inscribed a poem :
"And now across the dawn's grey
The climbing sun's first level ray
Long hoped, yet sudden when it came
Over the trembling grass did flame
And made the world alive once more
And therwithal a pause came o'er
The Earth and heaven, because she turned"
